Glasses nose pads, adhesive nose pads, and sunglasses nose pads

Symmetrical, or simply symmetric frame eyeglass pads, are nosepads whose left and right side are mirror images of each other. A left symmetrical nose pad is interchangeable with a right symmetrical nose pad of the same shape. Examples of glasses nosepads that are symmetric in shape are round nose pads, oval nose pads, and tear drop shaped nose pads.

Symmetric nose pads are very common among all types of glasses and sunglass frames and are available in many materials including soft silicone, ultra-light ultra-thin polycarbonate, soft-firm PVC, and self sticking adhesive soft foam. Nose pads for metal frames are often of the symmetrical type. Plastic eyeglasses without traditional nose pads often use self adhesive nose pads to provide the prescription glasses wearer or non prescription eyeglass wearer extra comfort around the nasal area of the spectacle frame.

Slide-in, push-on, screw-on, and clip-on nose pad mounting arms are common in glasses frames and eyeglass frame repair that use symmetrical shaped nose pads for glasses nose pad replacement. Sunglass and eyeglass manufacturers often use many equivalent terms to refer to the same nose pad mounting mechanism. For example, the term slide-on is equivalent to slide-in for both nose pads for sunglasses and standard eyeglass pads. Similarly, the term screw-in is equivalent to screw-on. The terms snap-in, snap-on, and push-in are all three equivalent terms for the common industry term of push-on nose pad mount. Lastly, the term clip-on nose pad mount is commonly referred to as crimp-on, Rayban, B&L, Bausch and Lomb, and Ray-Ban. Ray Ban nose pads and Ray Ban nose pad replacement pads are available in compatible nose pad replacement eyeglass pads. The preceding terms are trademarks or trade names of Bausch and Lomb.

The most recent technology arrival in the nose pad world is the use of an air filled chamber surrounded by a super thin and soft silicone shell which comprises the shape of the nose pad. These nose pads are called Air-Active nose pads or air filled nose pads. As the weight of the eyeglass exerts pressure on the nose pad, the nose pad compresses which causes the air chamber to expel air to the outside of the nose pad. The nose pad thus acts as a shock absorber to the force exerted by the eyeglasses or sunglasses. Furthermore, the front surface of the Air Active nose pad conforms more accurately to the shape of the underlying nose than any other type of nose pad. This shape matching feature enables maximum weight distribution of the eyeglass frame onto a larger surface area of the underlying nose which results in less pressure on individual locations on the underlying nasal surface.
